Prestwich Street: A Film for the Forgotten (2014).
This documentary is a retrospective look at the impact of the rediscovery of the 19th century ‘informal burial ground’ on Prestwich Street in the Green Point Precinct (formely disctrict 1) in Cape Town. The informal nature of this burial ground meant that it was primarily used for the interment of the enslaved, shipwrecked sailors, and underclass in the Cape colony. During the development of the Green Point area, this burial ground was rediscovered and what followed was community activism for the Prestwich dead. The end result was that a moratorium on the study of the human remains was put in place, and a memorial was created which currently emphasises the coffee brand Truth. This documentary observes the uncomfortable compromises made 13 years after the re-discovery of this burial ground.
